Ma Quan Zhu is a Chinese-born Australian artist who previously worked professionally in Jinan and Guangzhou creating a multitude of designs for the burgeoning Chinese textile industry. With an expertise in screen printing and colour work, as a student at the National Art School, Ma specialises in oil painting. His main purpose is to expand his own artistic skills through using his past experience into experimentation with painting. A selection of his image-making can be seen below. This body of work demonstrates Ma’s knowledge and understanding of his cultural heritage; this and his personal identity both play into his art, as do new perspectives derived from his immediate environment. Just look at his art and you will see that Ma sets out to produce works that are manifestations of deep conscious thoughts. Even in his portraiture Ma considers not only his own thoughts but in seeking to capture the essence of his subjects, he looks into his subject’s minds and through this you will see he amalgamates a spiritualism often lacking in portraiture. So in his refreshing work and with his expertise in line and colour also embrace scenes from daily life. And in some of his artistic creations you will also find responses to a wider field encompassing global issues that Ma holds close to his heart.
